On the sub-permutations of pattern avoiding permutations

چکیده
There is a deep connection between permutations and trees. Certain sub-structures of permutations, called sub-permutations, bijectively map to sub-trees of binary increasing trees. This opens a powerful tool set to study enumerative and probabilistic properties of sub-permutations and to investigate the relationships between ’local’ and ’global’ features using the concept of pattern avoidance. First, given a pattern μ, we study how the avoidance of μ in a permutation π affects the presence of other patterns in the sub-permutations of π. More precisely, considering patterns of length 3, we solve instances of the following problem: given a class of permutations K and a pattern μ, we ask for the number of permutations π ∈ Avn(μ) whose sub-permutations in K satisfy certain additional constraints on their size. Second, we study the probability for a generic pattern to be contained in a random permutation π of size n without being present in the sub-permutations of π generated by the entry 1 ≤ k ≤ n. These theoretical results can be useful to define efficient randomized pattern-search procedures based on classical algorithms of pattern-recognition, while the general problem of pattern-search is NP-complete.

The equidistribution of some vincular patterns on 132-avoiding permutations
A pattern in a permutation π is a sub-permutation of π, and this paper deals mainly with length three patterns. In 2012 Bóna showed the rather surprising fact that the cumulative number of occurrences of the patterns 231 and 213 are the same on the set of permutations avoiding 132, even though the pattern based statistics 231 and 213 do not have the same distribution on this set. Here we show t...
متن کاملImplicit Generation of Pattern-Avoiding Permutations Based on πDDs
Pattern-avoiding permutations are permutations where none of the subsequences match the relative order of a given pattern. Pattern-avoiding permutations are related to practical and abstract mathematical problems and can provide simple representations for such problems. For example, some floorplans, which are used for optimizing very-large-scale integration(VLSI) circuit design, can be encoded ...

In the late 1960s Don Knuth asked which permutations could be sorted by various data structures. For a simple stack, he proved that permutations avoiding the pattern 312 can be so sorted, and further, that the number of such permutations of length n is given by Cn, the n th Catalan number. Knuth went on to pose the same question about other data structures that are widely used in sorting operat...

Sergey Kitaev [4] has shown that the exponential generating function for permutations avoiding the generalized pattern σ-k, where σ is a pattern without dashes and k is one greater than the largest element in σ, is determined by the exponential generating function for permutations avoiding σ. We show that the exponential generating function for permutations avoiding the partially ordered patter...

We complete the enumeration of Dumont permutations of the second kind avoiding a pattern of length 4 which is itself a Dumont permutation of the second kind. We also consider some combinatorial statistics on Dumont permutations avoiding certain patterns of length 3 and 4 and give a natural bijection between 3142-avoiding Dumont permutations of the second kind and noncrossing partitions that use...
